Rural areas in Uganda often face challenges in accessing maternal health services

Maternity Care
Providing maternity care appointments to vulnerable mothers & newborn in Northern Uganda
Providing the best maternity care
This project supports women of the Otuke District region in Northern Uganda with access to the best maternity care appointments to bring their newborns safely into this world.
The need
In Uganda, 16 women die per day because of complications related to pregnancy and childbirth.
With no other health facilities within a 72km radius, The Kristina Health Clinic (KHC) was opened in 2012 to service the Otuke District in Northern Uganda.
The facts
Maternal mortality rates are unacceptably high compared to others worldwide
Only around half the women in Uganda receive postnatal care within the first two days after childbirth
Just over half of births in Uganda are attended by skilled health personnel
High rates of teenage pregnancy with 25% of girls having already given birth or being pregnant with their first child
Anaemia is a common issue, with almost a third of pregnant women experiencing anaemia
The objective
The objective is to grow the number of Kristina Health Centre (KHC) maternity care appointments that women attend during and after their pregnancy.
KHC's goal is that women increase the number of maternity care appointments they attend, from 0 to 8. The current average for women at KHC is 3.8 appointments.
Women in rural villages of northern Uganda often do not have the capacity to travel or know of facilities where they can give birth. The team at KHC undertake Outreaches all over the district, to educate and improve access to health care services, as part of the goal to increase maternity care appointments.
