Water Well Repairs

Restoring clean water to communities in Northern Uganda

The gift of clean water

This project supports the urgent need for repairs to boreholes for drinking and hygiene. Access to clean drinking water helps to reduce poverty and brings transformation to communities.

The need

In Northern Uganda, repairing broken water wells improves the livelihood of an entire community, removing the need for the women and children who are the ones to walk 5-10km, 3 times per day to collect water. Urgent repairs are needed to many water wells that have been broken for months, if not years.

How does access to clean water reduce poverty?

Women and children in Africa spend an approximate 200 million hours collecting water per day. In most cases the water is not clean.

The time that it takes to collect this water is preventing girls from accessing an education - education that will give them opportunities that poverty will not.

For women, as the primary caretakers of the land and family in Uganda, time spent walking for water takes them away from tending to their crop and caring for their family. The crops are essential and are the main source of income and food for a family. Once a crop has been harvested, a woman may sell at the market for income to send her children to school, to pay for health care and to buy other food. This income source will also allow her to start a small business or other income generating activity, building her family’s income and further paving their way out of poverty.

The objective

The objective of repairing water wells is to give people in the communities of Northern Uganda access to safe and clean water for drinking, and hygiene – sanitation and handwashing. It allows communities to enjoy access to water in the future for drinking, hygiene and pathways to help overcome poverty.

Your Pledge: the gift of clean water

With your help, water wells will be repaired meaning many more people in Northern Uganda will have access to clean drinking water. By restoring access to clean drinking water, communities will be transformed.
